What Is Community Access?

Community access is about getting out of the house and connecting with the world around you. For NDIS participants in Newcastle, it means having support to take part in social, recreational, and everyday activities in the community.

It's not just about filling time. Done well, community access builds confidence, develops social skills, and creates real connections. And Newcastle has plenty to offer.

Activities Available in Newcastle

Newcastle and the Hunter Region have a solid range of activities that work well for community access:

  • Bowling and indoor activities — Newcastle's bowling lanes are a popular option for social outings with support.
  • Swimming and aquatics — The Lambton Pool and nearby facilities offer great options for fitness and fun.
  • Parks and nature walks — Throsby Creek walking and cycle path, the Blackbutt Reserve, and local parks are perfect for getting outdoors.
  • Cafes and social outings — Grabbing a coffee in the Newcastle mall or trying a new restaurant is a great way to practise social skills.
  • Volunteering — Newcastle has community organisations that welcome volunteers, which can be a meaningful way to build skills and give back.
  • Library and learning — The Newcastle Regional Library runs programs and events that are welcoming and inclusive.
  • Shopping and errands — Learning to navigate shops, manage money, and run errands independently.
  • Gym and fitness — Several Newcastle gyms offer accessible memberships and programs.

How Community Access Funding Works

Community access is funded through the Core Supports category of your NDIS plan, under "Assistance with Social and Community Participation." Your plan will specify how many hours of community access you're funded for.

A support worker accompanies you during activities, providing whatever level of assistance you need. Some participants need hands-on support, while others just need someone nearby for confidence and safety.

Getting the Most Out of Community Access

The best community access programs are driven by the participant. That means choosing activities you actually enjoy, setting goals you care about, and having a support worker who's a good fit for your personality and interests.

At Asina, we match participants with support workers based on shared interests and compatibility. If you love fishing, we'll find a worker who enjoys being outdoors. If you want to try cooking classes, we'll make it happen.
